Quick answer
Start with the learning unit, not the monthly price. TryHackMe sells broad platform access through Free, Premium, and MAX. HTB Academy mixes free Tier 0 material, monthly Cube allocations that can permanently unlock selected Modules, and Student or annual subscriptions that provide broad access while active. HTB Labs is a separate subscription for more independent practice.
For a bounded study period, multiply the recurring charge by the number of billed periods and keep annual commitments separate. Then add only the products your plan actually requires. A lower displayed price can still be the wrong choice when it excludes the needed Path, tier, workspace, or practice environment; a higher plan can still be wasteful when access goes unused.

It does not declare a cheapest or best-value platform, promise a final invoice or refund, or infer learning quality from price. Every calculated figure is a modeled subtotal built from a dated public amount and an explicit number of billing periods.
Key facts
- TryHackMe currently documents Free, Premium, and MAX as different access tiers, with Premium and MAX available on monthly and annual billing bases.
- TryHackMe Free includes limited access and a documented one-hour daily AttackBox allowance; Premium removes the AttackBox time limit, while MAX adds advanced or cloud content and a persistent AttackBox.
- TryHackMe’s documented student discount applies to Premium Annual only, not monthly plans or MAX, and is not stackable with another coupon.
- HTB Academy’s monthly Silver, Gold, and Platinum plans allocate Cubes that can permanently unlock selected Modules.
- HTB Academy Student, Silver Annual, and Gold Annual are access-based: eligible content is available while the subscription is active, with different post-expiry behavior for completed and incomplete Modules.
- HTB Academy and HTB Labs are separate products and subscriptions. A learner who wants both structured instruction and independent Labs practice must model both costs.
- Tax, eligibility, checkout, discounts, refunds, and learner-specific curriculum cost remain separate verification items.
The product and access-model boundaries are documented in the current TryHackMe plan page, HTB Academy subscription guide, and Academy introduction.
Who should use this analysis
Use this page after you have narrowed the learning problem to structured cybersecurity labs and need to estimate the subscription commitment for one, three, or twelve months. It is designed for learners comparing TryHackMe access, HTB Academy Module ownership or broad access, and the optional addition of HTB Labs.
This page does not decide which platform teaches better. It also does not replace the product analyses for TryHackMe and HTB Academy or the pre-subscription evaluation checklist. Pricing becomes useful only after you name the exact Path, rooms, Modules, tier, workspace, and study period required.
For the underlying product models, read the TryHackMe product analysis, the HTB Academy product analysis, and the pre-subscription lab-evaluation checklist. If the learning direction itself is still open, start with the cybersecurity learning-path guide.

| Platform and plan | Displayed amount | Billing or access model | Documented cost-relevant boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| TryHackMe Free | $0 | Limited access | Inspect content and setup; browser AttackBox is documented at up to one hour per day. |
| TryHackMe Premium monthly | $6.99/month | Recurring monthly access | Full beginner/intermediate paths and unlimited AttackBox are documented; exact current inclusions require recheck. |
| TryHackMe Premium annual | $4.50/month billed annually | Annual commitment | Displayed monthly equivalent; modeled annual subtotal is $54.00 before tax or account-specific state. |
| TryHackMe MAX monthly | $20.18/month | Recurring monthly access | Adds documented advanced/cloud content and persistent AttackBox; not automatically necessary for every learner. |
| TryHackMe MAX annual | $12.99/month billed annually | Annual commitment | Modeled annual subtotal is $155.88 before tax; voucher and current feature conditions must be rechecked. |
| HTB Academy Student | $8/month | Access-based | Academic eligibility required; access through documented tiers and Paths while active. |
| HTB Academy Silver monthly | $18/month | 200 Cubes/month | Cubes can permanently unlock selected Modules; a Module plan is required to know whether the allocation is sufficient. |
| HTB Academy Gold monthly | $38/month | 500 Cubes/month | Higher Cube allocation; value depends on named Modules and existing balance. |
| HTB Academy Platinum monthly | $68/month | 1,000 Cubes/month | Largest monthly allocation; unused Cubes are not evidence that the plan was necessary. |
| HTB Academy Silver Annual | $490/year | Broad access through documented Tier II scope | Temporary access while active, with current Path and voucher benefits requiring recheck. |
| HTB Academy Gold Annual | $1,260/year | Broad access through documented Tier III scope | Advanced access and current voucher benefits; no outcome or savings conclusion. |
| HTB Labs VIP+ | $25/month or $223/year | Separate Labs subscription | Current HTB Labs documentation describes VIP+ as a separate subscription with personal Machine instances and unlimited Pwnbox. |
Takeaway: compare like with like. TryHackMe tiers sell broad platform access; HTB Academy monthly plans allocate permanent-unlock currency; HTB Academy Student/annual plans sell temporary broad access; HTB Labs is a separate independent-practice product.

Modeled subscription subtotals and terms
One-, three-, and twelve-month modeled subtotals
On a small screen, swipe or scroll the table horizontally to compare all columns.
| Plan | 1 month | 3 months | 12 months or annual commitment | Unit or access received |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TryHackMe Premium monthly | $6.99 | $20.97 | $83.88 | Broad Premium access for billed months |
| TryHackMe Premium annual | Not a one-month plan | Not a three-month plan | $54.00 modeled annual subtotal | Annual Premium commitment |
| TryHackMe MAX monthly | $20.18 | $60.54 | $242.16 | Broad MAX access for billed months |
| TryHackMe MAX annual | Not a one-month plan | Not a three-month plan | $155.88 modeled annual subtotal | Annual MAX commitment |
| HTB Academy Student | $8 | $24 | $96 | Access-based; eligibility required |
| HTB Academy Silver monthly | $18 / 200 Cubes | $54 / 600 Cubes | $216 / 2,400 Cubes | Permanent Module unlock currency |
| HTB Academy Gold monthly | $38 / 500 Cubes | $114 / 1,500 Cubes | $456 / 6,000 Cubes | Permanent Module unlock currency |
| HTB Academy Platinum monthly | $68 / 1,000 Cubes | $204 / 3,000 Cubes | $816 / 12,000 Cubes | Permanent Module unlock currency |
| HTB Academy Silver Annual | Not a one-month plan | Not a three-month plan | $490 annual display | Temporary broad access through documented Tier II scope |
| HTB Academy Gold Annual | Not a one-month plan | Not a three-month plan | $1,260 annual display | Temporary broad access through documented Tier III scope |
Monthly subtotals use simple multiplication. Annual TryHackMe figures multiply the displayed monthly equivalent by 12. These calculations do not prove a checkout charge or savings percentage. For HTB monthly plans, Cube totals assume the same documented monthly allocation across the modeled periods and do not subtract earned rewards or an existing balance.
Add separate products only when the workflow requires them
HTB Academy and HTB Labs require separate subscriptions. A learner using Academy for instruction and VIP+ for independent Labs practice must add both recurring charges. The following examples are planning arithmetic, not bundles offered by Hack The Box.
On a small screen, swipe or scroll the table horizontally to compare all columns.
| Modeled combination | Current documented subtotal | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Academy Student + Labs VIP+ | $33/month modeled | Student eligibility required; checkout and taxes were not observed. |
| Academy Silver monthly + Labs VIP+ | $43/month modeled | Combines 200 monthly Academy Cubes with separate Labs access. |
| Academy Silver Annual + Labs VIP+ annual | $713/year modeled | Uses two separate annual displays; no bundle discount, tax, or savings conclusion. |
The current VIP+ amounts come from the HTB Labs subscription guide. Recheck the live page before relying on either the monthly or annual amount.
TryHackMe discount and currency boundaries
TryHackMe documents a 20% student discount for Premium Annual only. It does not apply to monthly subscriptions or MAX and cannot be combined with another coupon. Eligibility and final checkout were not observed, so the discounted invoice is not calculated here. The student-discount guide contains the current scope.
TryHackMe documents localized B2C pricing in GBP, USD, EUR, and INR. That does not establish tax, conversion, or payment fees for a reader. Confirm the current currency display in the relevant account and market.
Renewal, cancellation, and refund conditions change the commitment
TryHackMe documents that cancellation stops future renewal, preserves access until the end of the current billing period, keeps progress, and ends subscriber-only access after expiry. The cancellation guide describes this boundary. Monthly subscriptions are documented as non-refundable; annual memberships have a limited seven-day condition only when course material has not been accessed or downloaded, with an additional MAX Annual voucher condition. Review the refund policy before purchase.
For HTB Academy, Cubes and Modules unlocked with Cubes remain after cancellation. Access-based incomplete Modules may lock after expiry, while completed Modules remain reviewable and progress is retained. The Academy cancellation guide documents those effects. Student eligibility and annual voucher expiry are separate conditions that can affect the useful scope of a plan. Verify Student eligibility and voucher expiry before counting either benefit.
Keep non-subscription costs visible but separate
A complete learner-specific cost record may also need to track:
- tax, VAT, currency conversion, payment, or regional fees;
- a capable computer, storage, virtualization support, or permitted cloud resources;
- internet bandwidth and regional latency;
- separate certification vouchers, retakes, or third-party exams;
- time lost to unused annual access or over-purchased Cube allocations;
- support, accessibility, device, regional latency, or reliability constraints that make a cheaper plan unusable.
These are not all chargeable line items, but they can change the practical cost of a plan. Keep them separate from the documented subscription subtotal so the arithmetic remains auditable.
Lower-commitment alternatives
- Use TryHackMe Free and its one-hour daily AttackBox allowance to inspect the learning and workspace model before subscribing.
- Use HTB Academy Tier 0 Modules and starter Cubes to inspect Sections, targets, and the Cube cycle.
- Buy one monthly period instead of an annual plan when the required Path, Module, device, accessibility, or schedule fit is uncertain.
- Choose a smaller HTB Cube allocation when a named Module list fits within it; do not accumulate Cubes without a plan.
- Delay the separate HTB Labs subscription until independent machines are a real next step rather than a future intention.
- Use an authorized local practice environment or free vendor resources when they satisfy the same immediate learning objective.
Unknowns and limitations
- No authenticated checkout, invoice, tax, VAT, currency-conversion, payment-method, promotion, student-verification, cancellation, or refund flow was observed.
- TryHackMe’s pricing page is region-aware. This refresh captured the USD display visible in the current public page; readers may see a different currency or amount by region, account state, or promotion.
- HTB Academy prices, Cube allocations, tiers, Paths, vouchers, CPE benefits, and cancellation rules can change.
- HTB Labs prices, features, and annual-versus-monthly comparisons can change; the current subscription page must be rechecked.
- The modeled subtotals do not estimate tax, refunds, discounts, existing balances, earned rewards, unused time, or total cost for a learner-specific curriculum.
- No teaching quality, support responsiveness, reliability, accessibility, device fit, learning efficiency, pass probability, employment outcome, salary, or return on investment was evaluated.
- No winner, ranking, score, “best value,” affiliate relationship, commission, or commercial CTA is approved.
Recheck every required source after , and immediately before any purchase involving a volatile price, discount, plan inclusion, refund rule, voucher, or separate-product amount.
Build your own cost record
- Name the exact learning requirement. Record the Path, rooms, Modules, tier, workspace, or independent Lab environment.
- Choose the access model. Decide between temporary broad access, permanent Module ownership, or a separate practice subscription.
- Set the study period. Use one, three, or twelve months based on a real schedule, not a vague intention.
- Record the live plan page. Save plan name, currency, billing basis, displayed amount, and checked date.
- Calculate a subtotal. Multiply only the recurring charge by the billed periods; keep annual plans as annual commitments.
- Add separate products only when required. For example, add HTB Labs to Academy only when independent Labs practice is part of the same study block.
- Record unknowns. Tax, eligibility, refund, device, support, accessibility, and account-specific state remain separate verification items.
- Decide: proceed with the smallest sufficient plan, delay while a material unknown remains, or compare a different learning model.
Before paying for any plan, use the online-course pricing and renewal-risk guide to record renewal, cancellation, refund, and promotion terms. This complements the lab-specific cost record and does not replace the exact checkout.
Methodology
This E1 analysis refreshed the official public TryHackMe and Hack The Box pages on September 10, 2026. It records displayed prices, access models, cancellation effects, refund conditions, discounts, Cube mechanics, student eligibility, voucher expiry, and HTB Labs pricing as bounded claims with a checked date; older snapshots are retained only as historical context.
Arithmetic was performed directly from displayed amounts and is labeled modeled. No account or checkout evidence was used. Plans were not normalized into a score because the units differ: TryHackMe access, HTB Academy Cubes, HTB Academy tier access, and HTB Labs practice are distinct products. The article preserves unknowns and does not infer quality, outcomes, or value from price.
